Tragedy strikes the migrant community at the border once again. The Ministry of Foreign Buzzy (SRE) confirmed on Monday that of the six people found dead inside a railroad car in Laredo, Texas, at least three were Mexican nationals.

The discovery, which took place last Sunday afternoon, was made after a railroad worker raised the alarm. Upon arriving at the site, local authorities were confronted with a heartbreaking scene: the bodies of five men and a woman who did not manage to survive the confinement in the train’s dry box.

Through an official statement, the Foreign Ministry informed that the Consulate General of Mexico in Laredo is already in contact with the Police Department to expedite the necessary procedures.

“The authorities confirmed the Mexican nationality of three of the people; the remaining ones are still in the process of identification,” the SRE detailed.

The Mexican government has already begun efforts to locate the families of the victims and offer them legal assistance and support for the repatriation of the remains.

Laredo: A critical point on the migration route

Laredo is known for being one of the busiest ports of entry between Mexico and the United States, but it is also a high-risk area.

The investigation is still open, awaiting the results of the medical examiner to determine the exact cause of death, although the conditions of heat and lack of oxygen in this type of container are usually the fatal factors in similar cases.

The SRE reiterated its condolences to the affected families and assured that it will maintain permanent communication with the Texan authorities to clarify the facts.

This tragedy adds to the long list of incidents in which migrants lose their lives while attempting to cross the border hidden in cargo vehicles or trains.

What measures do you think are needed to prevent more Mexican families from continuing to experience this type of bereavement at the border?
