Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has a new captain in the middle of the storm. David Venturella, a two-decade veteran of the agency but with a controversial stint in the private sector, has been appointed as the agency’s next acting director. Venturella will take office on June 1, replacing Todd Lyons, who is stepping down for health reasons.
This move is not just any office change. Venturella represents the return of the “hard line” to an agency that is now under the microscope after violent operations and constant pressure to execute the current administration’s promises of mass deportations. He is also considered an ally of Border Czar Tom Homan, who helped recruit him in January 2025, when Donald Trump returned to the White House.

What stands out most on Venturella’s resume is not only his 20 years at ICE, but his ties to Geo Group, one of the largest private prison contractors in the United States.
In 2012, Venturella left the agency to work with precisely this company that operates detention centers for migrants, a detail that for many activists represents a conflict of interest.
Or, at least, a sign that the detention policy will become more aggressive.
Venturella is no stranger to controversy.
During the administrations of George Bush and Barack Obama, he was a key player in the “Secure Communities” program, which forced local police to collaborate with “La Migra”.
A strategy that fractured the migrant community’s trust in local authorities.
ICE in the eye of the hurricane

The new director receives a wounded agency.
ICE is under intense public scrutiny following fatal incidents, such as the deaths of two U.S. citizens in Minneapolis at the hands of immigration agents earlier this year.
As the White House attempts to “clean up the image” of Homeland Security, plans have not changed: massive hiring of agents and warnings of large-scale operations in sanctuary cities continue.
Venturella, who returned to ICE last year to handle internal affairs, appears to be the Trump administration’s pick to bring order back home and speed up the removal machine.
What about you Onnda, do you think Venturella’s past in private prisons will affect his treatment of border detainees?
