The Seattle Seahawks and the New England Patriots will face each other this coming February 8 in the Super Bowl, the biggest sporting event of the year in the United States, which paralyzes the country and from which the NFL champion will emerge.

Sunday’s game will be the LX (60th) edition of the Super Bowl and will be played at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, the 68,500-seat home of the San Francisco 49ers. Here is a basic guide to understanding the game.

What is the field like?

American soccer is played on a field 120 yards long and 53.3 yards wide.

This is equivalent to 109.73 by 48.74 meters in this unit of the length measurement system used in the United States.

The field is divided in two and the 50-yard line marks the midfield.

The last 10 yards of each half, painted in a different color, correspond to the end zone.

At each end of the field is a tubular ‘Y’ shaped structure in which its top posts are 18.5 feet (5.64 meters) apart.

The match lasts 60 minutes, divided into four 15-minute halves.

However, a soccer game can extend to more than three hours because the clock is stopped for various game situations.

If the match ends in a draw, extra time is played, in which both teams are guaranteed at least one possession.

If the tie persists after these series, the outcome is by sudden death.

Each team has a roster of 53 players divided by function (offense, defense and special teams), although only 11 are on the field.

The basic objective is for offensive players to get the ball into the opponent’s end zone, something the defense seeks to prevent.

The offense has four opportunities (‘downs’) to advance at least 10 yards to gain four new opportunities.

If he fails to do so, he usually kicks the ball in the fourth to give the opponent a chance.

There are several ways to score points, the most coveted being the touchdown, which awards 6 points.

It is achieved when a player carries the ball into the end zone by running or catching a pass inside the end zone.

After this touchdown, the team has the option to score an extra point if its kicker passes the ball between the ‘Y’ at the end of the end zone.

He will get two points if instead of kicking he decides to carry the ball back into the end zone.

Another way to score points is with a ‘field goal’, which is worth three points.

This is a kick that the team attempts from an area of the field where it relies on its kicker’s ability to send the ball down the middle of the ‘Y’.

The longest kick in NFL history was 64 yards.

There is also the play known as ‘safety’, which awards two points to the defense when the offense is downed with the ball inside its own end zone.
