An immigration raid in the city of Los Angeles ended in chaos and confusion on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, when a federal agent was shot by friendly fire in the middle of an intervention to detain a man in irregular immigration status.

As confirmed by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the injured agent belongs to the United States Marshals Service (US Marshals) and was assisting in an operation led by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The objective was to apprehend an individual who had evaded a federal arrest warrant.

An operation that escalated rapidly

According to DHS spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin, the incident was triggered when the subject, whose identity has not yet been released, attempted to ram an ICE unit with his vehicle during an attempted arrest.

In response, the agents fired “defensive” shots, following their training protocols.

One of the bullets fired by the officers ricocheted off a surface and ended up impacting the federal agent’s hand.

The wanted man was also wounded, shot in the elbow.

Both were immediately transported to nearby hospitals and are in stable condition.

Concerns about the security of the operations

McLaughlin emphasized that “resisting arrest puts not only the federal agents at risk, but also the people in immigration status and the community.

He also pointed out that security measures are being reinforced in future operations, due to the increase in social tension in the face of migratory actions.

The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) confirmed that the individual was taken into custody and will face charges of obstruction of justice and endangering the lives of federal officers.

Several federal agencies involved

The investigation of the shooting was left to a task force comprised of DHS, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and the LAPD.

A stretch of Washington Boulevard in South Central Los Angeles was closed for several hours while forensics was conducted.

This new episode adds to the growing tension faced by immigration agencies in the United States.

According to recent DHS data, attacks and threats against federal agents involved in deportation operations have increased, especially following the tightening of immigration policies under the Trump administration.

Just last month, a sniper fired from a rooftop at ICE offices in Dallas, Texas, killing two migrants in federal custody.

These events reinforce the call of civil and human rights organizations to review the way in which immigration control operations are being carried out in urban areas.
