On June 5, 2025, Osceola County Sheriff Marcos R. Lopez was arrested on charges of racketeering and conspiracy to commit racketeering. Authorities accuse him of participating in an extensive illegal gambling ring in Central Florida that generated more than $21.6 million in illicit profits.

According to the Florida Attorney General’s Office, Lopez used his position to protect the operation and receive personal payments and campaign contributions.

The investigation, initiated in 2023 by the Department of Homeland Security(HSI) and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE), revealed that the network operated primarily in Lake and Osceola counties.

The center of operations was the Fusion Social Club in Kissimmee, where lottery games, slot machines and other unauthorized gambling activities were offered.

Following the arrest, Governor Ron DeSantis issued an executive order suspending Marcos Lopez from office.

In his place, he appointed Christopher Blackmon, regional chief of the Florida Highway Patrol, as acting sheriff of Osceola County.

Blackmon, who has 35 years of law enforcement experience, will assume the responsibilities while the investigation continues.
