Teacher James Andrew McGann attacked and killed a couple in front of their children while they were walking in Devil's Den Park.

On July 28, 2025, couple Clinton David Brink (43) and Cristen Amanda Brink (41) were brutally murdered while walking with their 7- and 9-year-old daughters in Devil’s Den State Park, Arkansas.

After a four-day intensive search, authorities arrested 28-year-old school teacher James Andrew McGann on July 30 and charged him with two counts of capital murder.

The family was walking on the Devil’s Den Trail when they were attacked with a knife.

The wife protected the girls and tried to save her husband, but both died.

The girls were unharmed and are now in the care of relatives.

McGann, who had recently moved to Arkansas and had been hired by Springdale Public Schools, was caught without resistance at a barber store in Springdale, where he was recognized thanks to the public dissemination of his image.

McGann previously worked as a teacher in Flower Mound, Texas, and in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, where he was placed on leave in 2023 after complaints of favoritism toward female students and poor classroom management.

Although internal inquiries did not conclude serious misconduct, several mothers recalled unusual behaviors such as tickling girls or acknowledging them with gifts.

In Arkansas he had not yet formally begun his school work for the 2025-2026 school year, so he did not come into contact with local students.

McGann was formally charged with capital murder for the Brinks’ deaths. He was not granted bail and could face the death penalty, given the particularly violent and random nature of the case. .

His preliminary arraignment was on August 1, where he remained practically silent and was assigned a public defender. His hearing is scheduled for August 25. .

Authorities closed all trails in the park and increased police presence in recreational areas of the state.

Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders called the events “one of the most painful experiences I’ve ever had,” and thanked citizens for their cooperation in apprehending the suspect.

Investigators are still looking for a possible motive, but have noted that the victim did not know the suspect, suggesting a random act.
