Justin Trudeau, former Prime Minister of Canada, and pop star Katy Perry seem to have taken the step that many considered the ultimate “confirmation”: going public on Instagram.
Perry reportedly shared a carousel of images from her visit to Japan on Saturday, December 6, 2025, where she appears with Trudeau in scenes that were interpreted as clearly romantic, such as posing cheek-to-cheek and sharing moments over a meal, including sushi. The publication occurred while the singer was in the country for her Lifetimes Tour dates.
Three days earlier, the issue had already gained momentum due to a publication by former Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. Kishida shared a photo on X where he appears with his wife, Yuko, accompanied by Trudeau and Perry, and in the text he referred to the singer as Trudeau’s “partner”.

That detail was read by many as an unintentional “reveal” that previewed what would later be seen on Instagram.
Following that post, Trudeau himself also shared the image and thanked the meeting. In his message, he wrote that he and Katy were happy to be able to sit down with Kishida and Yuko, and also thanked her for her friendship and for her commitment to the “rules-based international order,” a phrase typical of diplomatic language that drew attention for contrasting with Perry’s pop universe.
Katy Perry and Justin Trudeau: When pop and politics collide
The scene – a music superstar with a former head of government in a quasi-diplomatic context – triggered comments and memes. Analyst Ian Bremmer, president of Eurasia Group, joked that seeing Katy Perry doing international diplomacy was not on his list of “top risks” for 2025, reflecting the tone of surprise with which many received the news.
Rumors of a relationship had been circulating since the summer. Reports cited in the coverage indicate that they were first seen having dinner together, then in close moments on a yacht, and later leaving a nightclub in Paris holding hands.
As the months passed, the narrative grew to the current point, where Perry’s publication functions as the most direct gesture of public recognition.

Interest also increased because they both come from recent breakups. Trudeau announced his separation from Sophie Grégoire in August 2023 and they have three children. In Perry’s case, reports cite that she confirmed her breakup with Orlando Bloom, father of her daughter Daisy Dove, in July.
While it’s not common to see couples mixing politics and pop so directly, there is a family precedent cited in the coverage: Pierre Trudeau, Justin’s father and also a former Canadian prime minister, had a brief affair with Barbra Streisand in the late 1960s.
