Tragedy in Mexico: At least 23 dead in Waldo’s store fire

The incident sparked outrage very close to the US border

The Mexican Red Cross confirmed Saturday that the death toll from the fire at a Waldo’s store in downtown Hermosillo, capital of the northern state of Sonora, rose to 23 people, while the number of injured continues to be in the dozens.

“Yes, we have that number, 23 deaths so far: 12 females, five males, four girls and two boys,” said Carlos Freaner Figueroa, National President of the Mexican Red Cross.

Waldo’s fire leaves 23 dead


The incident occurred around 15:00 local time (21:00 GMT) in the establishment located on Dr. Alberto G. Noriega Ave. Noriega, between Benito Juárez and Mariano Matamoros streets, when the store was full of customers due to the holiday season and shopping prior to the Day of the Dead.

According to a preliminary report from local authorities, the victims include at least six minors, two pregnant women, several elderly people and employees of the site.

On social networks, the governor of Sonora, Alfonso Durazo Montaño, expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and assured that his administration will provide comprehensive support to those affected.

“I express my deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of those who died in the fire that occurred today in downtown Hermosillo. The state government will provide prompt and comprehensive attention to the victims and their loved ones,” said the governor.

Firefighters, Municipal Police and Civil Protection teams are still at the site, which remains cordoned off while investigations into the causes of the incident are being carried out.

Preliminarily, at least 12 people were also reported injured, of which seven were taken to the ISSSTE Hospital, one to the IMSS Clinic 14, two to the Northwest Clinic and two more to the State Specialties Hospital.

Authorities continue rescue and damage assessment efforts in the affected area.

Sheinbaum regrets tragedy and promises help

The president of Mexico, Claudia Shienbaum, regretted the death of 23 people in a fire at a Waldo’s store located in the center of Hermosillo, capital of the northern state of Sonora, and assured that she had sent aid to those affected.

“My heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of those who died in the fire that occurred in a store in downtown Hermosillo,” the governor said in a message posted on her social networks….

The Mexican governor assured that she has been in contact with the governor of the state, Alfonso Durazo, “to support in whatever is needed”.

He also instructed the Secretary of the Interior, Rosa Icela Rodríguez, “to send a support team to attend to the family members and the injured”.
