After passing away at the age of 48 last Wednesday, February 11, due to complications from stage IV colon cancer, the reality behind the scenes has been laid bare: even for a TV star, the health care system in the United States can be devastating.<\/p>\n

Hours after the death was confirmed, a campaign was set up on the GoFundMe platform<\/a> with a clear objective: to prevent James’ widow, Kimberly Van Der Beek, and their six minor children from falling into financial insolvency.<\/p>\n

In record time, the fundraising surpassed the 1.5 million dollars that was being asked for; at the time of editing this note, the fundraising was around 1,918,272, that is, almost two million dollars.<\/p>\n

Among those who have made a major donation to James Van Der Beek’s GoFundMe are director Steven Spielberg, whom Dawson Leary fervently admired in the Dawson’s Creek series he starred in, donating $25,000.<\/p>\n

While it may seem like an astronomical figure, for a Texas-based family who has faced years of experimental cancer treatments and prolonged hospitalizations, this money is barely a respite.<\/p>\n

According to the campaign description, the funds will not only cover funeral expenses, but will also go to pay accumulated medical debts, basic bills and the children’s education fund, who have been left in a vulnerable situation after the loss of the main provider in the household.<\/p>\n
