Ethan Hawke said Tuesday at the Berlinale<\/a> he was surprised by the animosity against artists for speaking out politically and, although he said that everyone has the right to agree or disagree with something, he assured that he is “totally in favor” of “anything that fights fascism.”<\/p>\n

At a press conference to present the film ‘The Weight’, which was presented out of competition at the Berlin festival, Hawke won over the press with his answers, although he declined to comment on specific political issues.<\/p>\n

After being asked about the controversy of this year’s Berlinale due to the lack of criticism by some filmmakers and the festival itself of the situation in Gaza, the actor first joked.<\/p>\n

“The last place they probably want to seek spiritual advice is from a bunch of drunk, ‘jet lagged’ artists talking about their movie,” he said eliciting laughter from the politicians.<\/p>\n

But the journalists insisted and one of them asked him about the recent public letter of more than 80 names of cinema -among them Javier Bardem, Tilda Swinton or Fernand Meirelles- criticizing the silence of the Berlinale on Gaza.<\/p>\n

He did not want to answer about that particular text because he did not know it, but he assured that the last time he spoke publicly about Gaza, he was very surprised by “the animosity” he encountered.<\/p>\n

“People say, ‘Actors shouldn’t talk about politics’ and things like that. And I really think the answer is the opposite: that we all should, that everybody should have the right to disagree,” he said.<\/p>\n

And while he noted that artists are not the big personalities fighting to establish peace, “we are all citizens of the world and we all matter, we all have a voice and we are all welcome to disagree.”<\/p>\n

The important thing, he added, is “to make sure that children and young people will have a good world and to do what we can to contribute.”<\/p>\n

“I love movies and I believe in the power of film to influence because it allows us to dream every night with something that heals us and prepares us for the next day. I feel that collectively, the whole festival, all of you, all of us here, are responsible for creating an international dream life,” the actor noted.<\/p>\n

He further stated that this is precisely what they offer with ‘The Weight’, a film about a group of people who believe they have nothing in common but realize how much they are united, something that should be extrapolated to the world.<\/p>\n

In ‘The Weight,’ set in Oregon in 1933, Hawke plays a widowed man with a little girl who gets into trouble and ends up in jail, where the man who runs the prison labor (Russell Crowe) offers him to participate in an illegal gold transfer, in exchange for his freedom.<\/p>\n

A film with a lot of action, shot in Germany, with which the director, Padraic McKinley, wanted to pay tribute to the action movies of the seventies, from which they have been inspired.<\/p>\n

Hawke had to do a lot of physical preparation and acknowledged that the challenge of doing different genres is what appeals to him most as an actor.<\/p>\n

In this case, a deeply physical experience because they shot in natural settings, suffering the wind, the rain, the cold and with some scenes filmed in the middle of a storm.<\/p>\n

“What I love about independent cinema is that it’s not about being the best you can be, but the best you can be depending on the circumstances,” he said. “It was totally fantastic,” said the star of films such as ‘Training Day’, ‘Boyhood’ and ‘Blue Moon’, for which he received his fifth Oscar nomination this year, reported Agencia EFE.<\/p>\n
