In an interview with EFE, Australian actor Daniel MacPherson vindicated the good moment of his country’s cinema when he presented ‘Beast’, the action and mixed martial arts film written by his compatriot Russell Crowe, in the United States.<\/p>\n

“We have a fantastic industry and we are very proud of it. A lot of films from around the world are shot in Australia and that only benefits the Australian industry. The films coming out of Australia are getting better and better,” he said in an interview with EFE in Miami.<\/p>\n

That national pride also includes ‘Beast’, a sports drama that brings together several Australian stars and is headed by Crowe, who, in addition to acting, co-wrote the screenplay with David Frigerio. The film, directed by Tyler Atkins, follows Patton James, played by MacPherson. <\/p>\n

It is about an athlete who had left behind his dream of competing in mixed martial arts to support his family, but is forced to return to the ring to save a brother.<\/p>\n

Joining Crowe and MacPherson are Luke Hemsworth, Mojean Aria, Kelly Gale, George Burgess, Bren Foster, Saphira Moran and singer Amy Shark. Many of them are longtime friends and “great colleagues.” <\/p>\n

“Australia is no longer just exporting stars, but also an industry capable of producing ambitious stories at home,” the 45-year-old actor stressed.<\/p>\n

Beyond the blows and the spectacular combat, the film, which opens next Friday, April 10, rests on a more intimate idea: breathing as a form of control and survival.<\/p>\n

The phrase that opens the film<\/a>, “breathe to think, think to win,” was born out of Crowe’s input during the writing work with Frigerio and ended up becoming a kind of emotional manifesto for the story. “I think in those first four minutes we tell the audience exactly what we’re fighting for,” he said. <\/p>\n

“One of my personal mantras is that your breath is your superpower,” he said. That inner control was key to building Patton, a character “very centered, very serene, very grounded,” far from the stereotype of the impulsive fighter. <\/p>\n

The actor gave himself to the role with an athletic intensity. For nearly three years he trained in mixed martial arts, increased muscle mass, reduced body fat and studied the mentality of fighters. <\/p>\n

The cost was high: during filming he broke his nose, suffered a pelvic injury and tore a thigh muscle. “When an opportunity like this comes along, with a cast like this and such a strong script, you do nothing but give it your all,” he said. <\/p>\n

His relationship with Crowe and with whom he has several projects was also essential. “He was in everything and we owe him a lot. The film is what it is because of him,” he stressed. <\/p>\n

Although ‘Beast’ represents some of his most demanding work, MacPherson drew on his more than 20 years of experience to deliver a powerful performance. His career began at the age of 17 on the popular Australian soap opera ‘Neighbours’, where he played Joel Samuels, a role created specifically for him and which earned him a Logie Award as a new talent. <\/p>\n

He later worked on the British series ‘The Bill’, participated in ‘City Homicide’, headed the Australian production ‘Wild Boys’ and established himself internationally with titles such as ‘Strike Back’, ‘The Shannara Chronicles’ and ‘Foundation’, the Apple TV series based on Isaac Asimov’s texts.<\/p>\n

In film he has also appeared in ‘Infini’, ‘Poker Face’ and ‘Land of Bad’. In addition, he hosted seven seasons of the Australian version of ‘Dancing With the Stars’, a television facet very different from the roughness of Patton James, although he confessed that both projects are united by “the fact that I’m very bad at dancing. I owed them on the leg work for ‘Beast'”. <\/p>\n

That mix of television popularity, physical discipline and international experience makes this film feel like a synthesis of his journey. It is also a statement on the present of the Australian audiovisual industry, an ecosystem that, according to MacPherson, today allows for the promotion of local projects with global muscle. <\/p>\n

“The films coming out of Australia are getting better and better,” he insisted. And in ‘Beast’, where the body endures brutal punishment but the head must remain calm, MacPherson seems to have found a very personal way to demonstrate this, reported Agencia EFE. <\/p>\n
