Spanish-Mexican actor<\/a> and director Daniel Gim\u00e9nez Cacho is aware that in a country like Mexico, where more than 10 women are murdered every day, “the saturation of violence can make its citizens insensitive” and alienate them from “a reality” such as the “abusive” patriarchal system faced by the protagonist of his debut film, ‘Juana’.<\/p>\n

“It is a violent system at home or in politics and it manifests itself in the censorship of journalism, murders and persecutions. It is an overwhelming reality and this violence is generating a lot of impotence,” he explains in an interview with EFE for the premiere of the film on April 16.<\/p>\n

At the age of 64, Gim\u00e9nez Cacho decided to make his debut as a filmmaker, telling about cases of femicides that are often covered up by the justice system or are not published by “independent journalism”, which he considers “very important to have a more real contact with what is happening”.<\/p>\n

To do so, he chooses Juana, a fictitious journalist semi-retired from her profession and specialized in cases of male violence, who will be threatened again after trying to uncover a politician linked to the murders of several women.<\/p>\n

Actress Diana Sedano, in charge of giving voice to the protagonist, recognizes that feminicides may have “stopped being news” after a “boom” of feminist articles, and warns of the need for society “not to get used to” or adopt a passive attitude towards these cases.<\/p>\n

“Let’s not leave it to cinema or art to solve something that has to be solved socially and collectively. ‘Juana’ looks back at you so that you don’t become numb, so that you don’t wait for it to be resolved in fantasy and think you have nothing to do,” argues Sedano.<\/p>\n

Margarita Sanz, who plays Juana’s mother, a woman with senile dementia and also a victim of domestic violence, a character who, according to the actress, reflects the need to rethink the education of men in Mexican homes.<\/p>\n

“In Mexico we women have Jesus in our mouths, which means that we live in fear because the number of femicides has not decreased. This situation is also related to the education given to men in our country; we can’t stop talking about it,” says the 72-year-old performer.<\/p>\n

In a country like Mexico with more than 7,800 theaters, the fourth territory with the largest number of theaters in the world, ‘Juana’ will be released in only 40 theaters, a common figure for Mexican films that, despite the approval in the Chamber of Deputies of a reform of the Film and Audiovisual Law, compete at a disadvantage with U.S. blockbusters.<\/p>\n

“What is missing here is the power of the state to ensure diversity. The market is dominated by Hollywood, and there are many things that are not Hollywood that are indispensable for cultural health,” Gim\u00e9nez Cacho defends in annoyance.<\/p>\n

According to the bill, which has yet to be ratified by the Senate, 10% of Mexican movie theaters will have to screen national productions, a figure that is currently far from being a reality due to the large number of foreign feature films being screened.<\/p>\n

“Cultural diversity is a right, it is accepted in the laws but it is not enforced, and the only one who could enforce it is the state, which could be faced with regulating the market and guaranteeing this diversity,” the director concludes, reported Agencia EFE, while awaiting to see the final text of the legislation.<\/p>\n
