Journalist Yolaine Diaz<\/span><\/span>known for her work for years in People en Espanol<\/span><\/span>died early Monday morning as a result of a devastating fire in a six-story residential building in the Inwood section of upper Manhattan, New York.<\/p>\n

His mother also lost her life in the accident, Ana Mirtha Lantigua<\/span><\/span>as well as a third person whose identity was also reported among the fatalities. The tragedy also left 14 people injured and close to a hundred residents homeless. <\/p>\n

According to authorities, the flames started on the second floor of the building and spread rapidly through the interior staircase until they reached the upper part of the building. The intensity of the smoke complicated evacuation efforts and forced the deployment of around 200 firefighters to control the fire. <\/p>\n

According to people close to the family, Yolaine Diaz and her mother were trying to escape through the internal staircase when they were trapped by the smoke. The journalist’s stepfather managed to survive after using the building’s exterior fire escape staircase. <\/p>\n

Authorities<\/a> continue to investigate the exact causes of the incident.<\/p>\n

Born in Bonao<\/span><\/span>Yolaine emigrated as a teenager to New York City<\/span><\/span>where she studied journalism at Lehman College in the Bronx. Her career at People en Espa\u00f1ol began more than 15 years ago as an intern and, thanks to her dedication, she grew professionally to become a writer and digital editor specializing in fashion and beauty. <\/p>\n

Those who worked with her highlight not only her professionalism, but also her enthusiasm for Latino entertainment. The former editor-in-chief of the magazine, Armando Correa<\/span><\/span>recalled that Yolaine possessed a unique authenticity and a genuine passion for telenovelas and Hispanic celebrities. <\/p>\n

Another of her great weaknesses was animals, especially her Chihuahua puppy named Bella, who, according to reports, was found in the journalist’s arms after the tragedy.<\/p>\n

Friends, colleagues and readers have expressed deep sadness at the passing of Yolaine Diaz, remembering her as a woman who was passionate about life and committed to her work. Just days before her passing, she had returned from a trip to Mexico and continued to be an active contributor to People en Espa\u00f1ol. <\/p>\n

While the investigations are progressing, the tragedy has also drawn attention to the condition of the building. According to newspaper reports, the building had accumulated multiple housing code violations, a situation that is now part of the official investigation. <\/p>\n
