Mexican filmmaker<\/a> Fernanda Tovar brings her debut feature film ‘Chicas Tristes (Sad Girlz)’, a tale of sexual violence told through two friends, to the Tribeca Film Festival in New York on Thursday.<\/p>\n

The feature film narrates how Paula (Darana \u00c1lvarez) and La Maestra (Roc\u00edo Guzm\u00e1n) try to deal, out of ignorance and guilt, with the rape suffered by the former at a party.<\/p>\n

“When I was writing the film I thought the problem was going to be solved, but to my surprise it’s not. It seems that you can have an opinion if you are for or against women’s rights. For me it is unquestionable,” says the director in a virtual interview with EFE before the premiere.<\/p>\n

“The film never had a didactic purpose behind it, but it tries to make us ask ourselves questions. I think that’s a little bit the job of cinema or art in general: to throw a reflection of life so that we ourselves question things,” he says.<\/p>\n

The film, which won the Crystal Bear for Best Film in the Generation14plus section of the Berlin International Film Festival, explores how the victim’s life changes after experiencing sexual assault.<\/p>\n

‘Sad Girlz’ thus starts from a particular story to relate an experience that is familiar to many, and is, in turn, a portrait of “the intimacy of women, of what goes on behind the scenes when something like this happens.”<\/p>\n

“I was very interested in being able to narrate the distance between theory and reality, and I’m very happy that my first film is about friendship because it’s something that crosses me, like all people,” he says.<\/p>\n

‘Sad Girlz’ (‘Chicas tristes’, in Spanish) stems from a personal story of Tovar’s, but is also inspired in some ways by the ‘Me Too’ movement in Mexico, explains the director, who until now had focused on short films.<\/p>\n

“I started writing the script in 2018. I lived through ‘Me Too’ and its ‘demise,’ and now we’re in this bizarre limbo of not knowing what’s going to happen,” she expresses.<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, Tovar recalls that during the filming of the movie, starring mostly very young actors, he encountered a generation “that is not only informed, but also concerned and trying to change things”.<\/p>\n

“I think there is an ultra-right-wing tendency today among the youth, but I felt that for them (the cast) it was also relevant to tell this story. They saw it as their own issue,” he recalls.<\/p>\n

In fact, when screening the film at other festivals such as Berlin, he noticed that sometimes the children “were the ones who cried the most and were most affected by the film”.<\/p>\n

“We have to understand that this is not a war between men and women. Patriarchy affects us all,” she says.<\/p>\n

The arrival of ‘Sad Girlz’ in the U.S.<\/b><\/h2>\n

Tovar’s first film arrives in the United States at a time when the country is experiencing “fascist and macho” tendencies and is promoting numerous policies against the Latino community, the filmmaker points out.<\/p>\n

In this context, she says she would “love” for the feature film to be distributed in the country “to be able to tell a story that is not just about women, but about Latina women: “I want it to continue to connect with audiences and generate all those questions”.<\/p>\n

‘Sad Girlz’ competes in the international narrative section and premieres this evening at the Village East By Angelika cinema, with two more showings this Friday at 18:00 and 21:15 local time at the AMC 19th St. East 6, reported Agencia EFE. <\/p>\n
