The Government of Mexico, headed by President Claudia Sheinbaum, sent a diplomatic note to the United States requesting details about the installation of a military base on the common border.<\/p>\n

On April 11, 2025, President Trump signed a memorandum transferring control of the “Roosevelt Reserve.”<\/p>\n

It is a strip approximately 18 meters wide that stretches across the states of California, Arizona and New Mexico, from the Department of the Interior to the Department of Defense<\/a>.<\/p>\n

This action allows the Army to establish a military base in the area, with the stated objective of strengthening border security and apprehending migrants crossing irregularly.<\/p>\n

The measure has generated controversy, as it could contravene the Posse Comitatus Act of 1878.<\/p>\n

It prohibits the use of the Army in law enforcement functions within U.S. territory without congressional authorization.<\/p>\n

“We hope that it does not cross the border and that there will continue to be the same collaboration as there has been so far in terms of security,” said the president.<\/p>\n

Sheinbaum also expressed that the Mexican government does not know at this time what tasks the U.S. Armed Forces will perform in those areas.<\/p>\n

He expects them to be carried out respecting Mexican territory.<\/p>\n

“We don’t know if it is to continue building the wall or what the objective would be, but in any case what we always ask for is respect and coordination,” he added.<\/p>\n
