Toronto Blue Jays center fielder Daulton Varsho made one of the most spectacular plays of the 2025 MajorLeague Baseball (MLB<\/a>) season with a behind-the-back catch that many already consider a “Play of the Year” candidate. It happened during the first game of the series between the Boston Red Sox and the Blue Jays at the Rogers Centre in Toronto.<\/p>\n

It was the top of the fourth inning and Red Sox Mexican outfielder Jarren Dur\u00e1n was looking to extend his team’s lead to 7-2. Dur\u00e1n hit a deep fly to center field. Varsho, covering the position, ran full speed back trying to locate the ball, but lost traction on the turf and slipped. Far from giving up, Daulton Varsho turned his body in mid-slide, located the ball out of the corner of his eye and, stretching out his left arm, managed to catch it backwards. The crowd erupted in cheers, as did his partner on the mound, Dillon Tate, who raised his arms in celebration.<\/p>\n

This catch has been widely shared on social media<\/a> and sports platforms such as MLB Network and SportsNet Canada.<\/p>\n

Analysts highlight Daulton Varsho’s intuition, reflexes and technique to complete an action that not only defies logic, but highlights the level of MLB defense in 2025.<\/p>\n

Although the play did not change the course of the game – the Red Sox won 10-2 – it did steal the night’s spotlight.<\/p>\n

The catch stopped a potential extra-base hit by Mexico’s Dur\u00e1n and prevented Boston from extending its lead even further at that point.<\/p>\n
