Sons Farms company bus in rural Albion, upstate New York.<\/p>\n<p>The raid occurred on the morning of Friday, May 2, and was publicly denounced by the United Farm Workers Union (UFW), a national organization that defends the rights of day laborers, farm workers and other farm workers in the United States.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>The context: workers in the process of unionization<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_37002\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-37002\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-37002 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/queonnda.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/ice-detiene-jornaleros-agricolas-ny-01.jpg\" alt=\"ICE detains day laborers NY, ICE, farm laborers, New York, Qu\u00e9Onnda\" width=\"1200\" height=\"1050\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-37002\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">ICE detains 14 farmworkers in NY and the UFW launches protest \/ PHOTO: UFW Facebook<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>According to Gabrilla Szpunt, <a href=\"https:\/\/ufw.org\/es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UFW<\/a> regional coordinator, the arrested workers were in contact with the union and were involved in unionization talks.<\/p>\n<p>Some of them had been living and working in the country for decades, and their detention represents a hard blow both to their families and to the labor cause they had been promoting.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is not just an immigration raid, this is a direct attack on those seeking to defend their rights,&#8221; Szpunt told the local <a href=\"https:\/\/orleanshub.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Orleans Hub<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The union has had previous disputes with Lynn-Ette &amp; Sons Farms, including an unfair labor practice complaint.<\/p>\n<p>In this complaint, the company was accused of expelling a union representative who attempted to dialogue with workers inside the farm.<\/p>\n<h2>Transfers and protests<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_37004\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-37004\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-37004\" src=\"https:\/\/queonnda.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/ice-detiene-jornaleros-agricolas-ny-02.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"1500\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-37004\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">ICE detains 14 farmworkers in NY \/ PHOTO: UFW Facebook<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The workers were transferred to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ice.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ICE<\/a> detention center in Buffalo, where they are believed to remain in custody.<\/p>\n<p>In response, union and local community members staged a protest in front of the detention center, demanding his release and a fair trial.<\/p>\n<p>The UFW has requested legal counsel for the detainees and asks that their right to a hearing before an immigration judge be respected.<\/p>\n<h2>Precedent in California: a battle won<\/h2>\n<p>This new case is reminiscent of another operation that occurred in January of this year in California&#8217;s Central Valley.<\/p>\n<p>On that occasion, more than 200 immigrants were arrested in an operation led by Customs and Border Protection (CBP).<\/p>\n<p>At the time, the UFW filed a lawsuit alleging that these were arbitrary arrests targeting farmworkers.<\/p>\n<p>A federal court ruled in favor of the union, prohibiting CBP from making random arrests at agricultural worksites, setting a key precedent for workers&#8217; rights.<\/p>\n<h2>What can farm workers do if they are arrested?<\/h2>\n<p>The UFW and organizations such as RAICES, NILC and United We Dream recommend to all workers:<\/p>\n<p>Do not sign any document without legal presence.<\/p>\n<p>Ask to speak to a lawyer.<\/p>\n<p>Remind them that they have the right to remain silent and not to disclose their immigration status.<\/p>\n<p>Memorize a trusted contact number.<\/p>\n<h2>&#8220;You are not alone&#8221;<\/h2>\n\n<p>The UFW insists that these workers &#8220;are not alone&#8221;
