The new voluntary self-deportation program, promoted by President Donald Trump’s administration, is already underway in the United States. It is a measure that allows certain immigrants to voluntarily return to their country of origin with financial assistance from the federal government.<\/p>\n

And while the issue has generated controversy, many people are asking: Who qualifies? What does it imply? And what does it mean for other immigrants?<\/p>\n

What is this program?<\/h2>\n

This is a plan launched in April 2025 by the Department of Homeland Security<\/a> (DHS), in which immigrants without legal status can apply for voluntary departure from the country.<\/p>\n

In exchange for registering and completing the process, the government offers $1,000 in financial support, in addition to airfare and assistance to return to their country in a “dignified manner and without a criminal record in the U.S.”.<\/p>\n

The process is done through the CBP Home mobile application, without the need to appear before a judge.<\/p>\n

Over 18 years of age<\/p>\n

Not having legal status<\/a> in the U.S.<\/p>\n

No serious criminal convictions<\/p>\n

Not be in active proceedings before an immigration judge.<\/p>\n

Voluntarily agree to return to their country of origin.<\/p>\n

The application is reviewed on a case-by-case basis. It is not automatic or immediate.<\/p>\n

By registering for this program:<\/p>\n

The immigrant waives his right to fight his case in court.<\/p>\n

The government can register your departure as voluntary, not as a deportation.<\/p>\n

The person may have fewer restrictions to re-enter legally in the future.<\/p>\n

However, anyone who fails to report on time or violates the terms of the agreement may face formal deportation with more severe consequences.<\/p>\n

Is it for everyone?<\/h2>\n\n

No. This option may be useful for those who:<\/p>\n

They were already planning to return<\/p>\n

They have no option to legalize their status<\/p>\n
