Currently, about 1.6 million people without legal immigration status are enrolled in the program.<\/p>\n<h2><!--more--><\/h2>\n<h2>Why is this change being considered?<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_40618\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-40618\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-40618\" src=\"https:\/\/queonnda.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/california-medi-cal-4.jpg\" alt=\"California Medi-Cal\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-40618\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">PHOTO: Shutterstock<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>According to the California Governor&#8217;s Office, the state spends about $8.5 billion annually to provide health coverage to undocumented immigrants through Medi-Cal.<\/p>\n<p>The objective of these new measures is to save at least $5.4 billion over the next few years, in the midst of a period of fiscal uncertainty.<\/p>\n<p>Factors such as volatility in the markets, declining tax revenues, and tensions with the Federal Government, especially under President Donald Trump&#8217;s administration, have pushed the state to take drastic measures to balance its budget.<\/p>\n<h2>Who would keep their coverage?<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_40620\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-40620\" style=\"width: 1517px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-40620\" src=\"https:\/\/queonnda.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/california-medi-cal-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1517\" height=\"800\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-40620\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">PHOTO: Shutterstock<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p>The proposal would not eliminate coverage for those already enrolled.<\/p>\n<p>Nor would it affect undocumented children, who will still be able to access Medi-Cal if they meet the requirements.<\/p>\n<p>That is, current beneficiaries would continue to be covered, but no new undocumented adults would be accepted after 2026.<\/p>\n<p>These modifications represent a significant step backward from the California governor&#8217;s previously stated goal of achieving universal health coverage regardless of immigration status.<\/p>\n<h2>Impact for Hispanics<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_40622\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-40622\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-40622\" src=\"https:\/\/queonnda.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/california-medi-cal-2.jpg\" alt=\"California Medi-Cal\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-40622\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">PHOTO: Shutterstock<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Hispanic community represents a high percentage of undocumented immigrants in California.<\/p>\n<p>This proposal would directly affect access to health care for undocumented Hispanic adults.<\/p>\n<p>A group that already faces obstacles to receiving adequate medical care.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p style=\"color: #fd9737;\">The proposal would not eliminate coverage for those already enrolled<\/p><cite>QueOnnda.com<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n<p>Civil rights and health organizations have already expressed their concern.<\/p>\n<p>They describe the measure as a threat to the welfare of thousands of working families who depend on this system for basic and preventive care.<\/p>\n<p>For more information, visit <a href=\"https:\/\/queonnda.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">QueOnnda.com.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>California Governor Gavin Newsom introduced a new budget proposal that would freeze the enrollment of new adult undocumented immigrants into the Medi-Cal public health program beginning in January 2026, as part of a plan to address the state&#8217;s growing deficit estimated at $16 billion.
