The prison system in New Orleans, Louisiana is facing a security crisis after 10 inmates were confirmed to have escaped from the Orleans Parish Justice Center on Friday. So far, only one has been recaptured and nine remain at large, according to Sheriff Susan Hutson’s Office and local media such as NOLA.com.<\/a><\/p>\n

The escape was detected during a routine count conducted at 8:30 a.m. by prison personnel. Authorities indicated that the inmates managed to escape from their cells through defective locks and gained access to a maintenance corridor, which facilitated the escape.<\/p>\n

Sheriff Hutson acknowledged that the escape from this New Orleans jail would not have been possible without additional help.<\/p>\n

“We have reason to believe that the inmates received inmate assistance,” he told a press conference.<\/p>\n

He added that an internal and external investigation has been initiated to determine operational and infrastructure failures.<\/p>\n

Authorities are also analyzing security videos and the movements of prison staff to identify any negligence or complicity.<\/p>\n

The fugitives in this New Orleans jail are classified as highly dangerous.<\/p>\n

Four of them face murder charges, and others face felony weapons and drug trafficking charges.<\/p>\n

One of the most sought after is Derrick Groves.<\/p>\n

He was convicted in 2024 of two murders and two attempted murders linked to a shooting during Mardi Gras in 2018.<\/p>\n

The only one arrested so far is Kendall Myles, who was captured after a brief foot chase in the French Quarter, a tourist area of downtown New Orleans.<\/p>\n
