{"id":51625,"date":"2025-06-18T16:06:05","date_gmt":"2025-06-18T20:06:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/queonnda.com\/miami-sets-immigration-alarm-bells-ringing-by-approving-agreement-with-ice\/"},"modified":"2025-06-18T16:13:36","modified_gmt":"2025-06-18T20:13:36","slug":"miami-sets-immigration-alarm-bells-ringing-by-approving-agreement-with-ice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/queonnda.com\/en\/miami-sets-immigration-alarm-bells-ringing-by-approving-agreement-with-ice\/","title":{"rendered":"Miami Approves ICE Deal, Sparking Fear Among Immigrant Communities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ai-optimize-6 ai-optimize-introduction\">The city of Miami, known for having the largest proportion of foreign population in the United States, approved Tuesday a controversial agreement that will allow its Police Department to collaborate directly with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to detain and transfer undocumented immigrants.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-7\">With a 3-2 split vote, the City Commission endorsed the so-called 287(g) agreement, a measure that has generated strong opposition among activists, human rights advocates and Hispanic residents who fear an intensification of immigration raids.<\/p>\n<h2><!--more--><\/h2>\n<h2 class=\"ai-optimize-8\">What does the 287(g) agreement mean?<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_51613\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-51613\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-51613\" src=\"https:\/\/queonnda.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/miami-2.jpg\" alt=\"Miami\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-51613\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">PHOTO: Shutterstock<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-9\">This agreement authorizes local police to act as federal immigration agents, detaining individuals suspected of being in an irregular situation to be turned over to ICE.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-9\">Although presented as a \u201cpublic safety\u201d tool, several studies have pointed out that this type of agreement increases racial discrimination and fear in immigrant communities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-9\">According to official figures, Miami-Dade is the only county in the country where more than 50% of the population is foreign.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-9\">While 70% of its residents identify themselves as Hispanic or Latino.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-9\">Activists such as Dariel G\u00f3mez of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aclu.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ACLU<\/a> warn that these policies damage trust between communities and local police.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-9\">\u201cMiami was built by immigrants.
