U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), the federal agency responsible for processing citizenship, visas and residency permits, announced plans to create an internal police unit that will have powers to carry weapons, make arrests and execute expedited deportations, according to The Wall Street Journal<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Until now, USCIS was kept separate from the detention and deportation duties performed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), with the purpose of making immigrants feel safe to appear for interviews or submit official documentation.<\/p>\n

With this decision, the agency breaks with that tradition and enters into law enforcement work.<\/p>\n

This has raised concerns among immigration activists and lawyers, who fear that many applicants will desist from regularizing their status for fear of arrest.<\/p>\n

USCIS Director Joe Edlow explained that the new federal agents will be trained specifically to detect patterns of fraud in immigration applications.<\/p>\n

Some examples noted by the agency include:<\/p>\n

Identical applications from groups of immigrants from the same country.<\/p>\n

Individuals who simulate disabilities to avoid the English language test required in the naturalization process.<\/p>\n

Cases of lies in citizenship applications that could result in denaturalization (loss of acquired citizenship).<\/p>\n

Edlow said the goal is not to inhibit legitimate applications, but to reduce fraudulent ones.<\/p>\n

“I don’t expect it to inhibit applications. I anticipate it will inhibit fraudulent applications,” he told the WSJ.<\/p>\n

Armed agents with new powers<\/h2>\n

Under the plan, hundreds of federal agents will be trained to carry weapons, execute arrest warrants and even bring charges against immigration attorneys involved in preparing fraudulent applications.<\/p>\n

This represents a profound change in the role of USCIS, which until now was dedicated to the civil administration of immigration processes without performing law enforcement duties.<\/p>\n

Since Donald Trump’s return to the White House in 2025, his administration has tightened immigration enforcement with more aggressive measures.<\/p>\n

In recent months, ICE<\/a> has sent agents to citizenship, permanent residency or asylum interviews, arresting applicants directly at immigration offices.<\/p>\n

The creation of this police force within USCIS is part of this strategy of tightening immigration policy and expanding the network of agencies involved in immigration detention.<\/p>\n
