Mexican<\/a> director Guillermo del Toro told EFE on Sunday that he has begun work on a new film to be shot in Spain “in the future”, a sequel to ‘El espinazo del diablo’ (2001) and ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’ (2006).<\/p>\n

Del Toro, on the red carpet of the Tribute Awards at the Toronto International Film Festival, which presented him with the Roger Ebert Directing Award on Sunday night, explained that the film will be called ‘3993’.<\/p>\n

Asked if he has any new project in Spain since the last one was 20 years ago, specifically ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’, the director of ‘Frankenstein’ said yes.<\/p>\n

“I have a third film in the ‘Pan’s (Pan’s) Labyrinth’ trilogy, ‘El espinazo (del diablo),’ and there is one more, ‘3993,’ that I would be interested in making in the future.”<\/p>\n

Del Toro added, “I just wrote it, I’m telling you.”<\/p>\n

Pressed to offer more details, the director limited himself to saying with a chuckle that “it was based on an idea of Mateo Gil (screenwriter), but Mateo says he doesn’t remember. So we have to remember or start from scratch”.<\/p>\n

The trilogy began in 2001 with ‘El espinazo del diablo’, a horror film set in the last year of the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) and which tells the story of a boy in an orphanage who is haunted by the ghost of another recently deceased child.<\/p>\n

The film was produced by Pedro and Agust\u00edn Almod\u00f3var’s company El Deseo.<\/p>\n

Five years later, Del Toro released its spiritual sequel, ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’, which is considered one of the director’s most representative films and for which he received a 22-minute standing ovation at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival.<\/p>\n

The film won three Oscars (Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction and Best Makeup) although Del Toro missed out on Best Director.<\/p>\n

Del Toro has previously spoken of completing the trilogy with a new film that could also take place against the backdrop of the Spanish Civil War and Spain in 1993, reported Agencia EFE.<\/p>\n
