EFE\/CJ GUNTHER<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Boston, the capital and most populous city in Massachusetts, has been a national leader in immigrant advocacy for years.<\/p>\n<p>Its local regulation, known as the Boston Trust Act of 2014, prohibits municipal police from collaborating with ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) to detain or deport undocumented persons solely on the basis of their immigration status.<\/p>\n<p>Mayor Michelle Wu recently reaffirmed, in remarks to WBUR, that any officer who shares information with ICE in violation of this policy will face disciplinary sanctions.<\/p>\n<p>For the Trump administration, that stance represents a direct challenge to its restrictive immigration policy.<\/p>\n<h2>The federal government&#8217;s arguments<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_19248\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19248\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19248\" src=\"https:\/\/queonnda.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/nuevos-rascacielos-Boston-2.jpg\" alt=\"new skyscrapers Boston\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19248\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">PHOTO: Shutterstock<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In the statement of claim, U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi accused Michelle Wu of &#8220;explicitly executing policies designed to undermine law enforcement and shield illegal aliens from justice.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Justice Department argued that Boston&#8217;s failure to cooperate with ICE &#8220;results in the release of dangerous criminals into police custody who would otherwise be subject to deportation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According to the lawsuit, this practice places public safety at risk and contradicts the constitutional obligation of cities to abide by federal law.<\/p>\n<h2>A broader strategy against sanctuaries<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_75329\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-75329\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-75329\" src=\"https:\/\/queonnda.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/trump-1.jpg\" alt=\"Trump\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-75329\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">PHOTO: Shutterstock<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On August 5, the White House published a <a href=\"https:\/\/queonnda.com\/en\/trump-releases-shortened-list-of-sanctuary-jurisdictions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">list of jurisdictions considered &#8220;sanctuary&#8221; jurisdictions<\/a> to pressure mayors and governors to abandon these policies.<\/p>\n<p>These include New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Denver, in addition to states such as California, Illinois and Colorado, which are already facing similar lawsuits.<\/p>\n<p>Trump had already tried in his first term to freeze federal funding for sanctuary cities.<\/p>\n<p>Although in most cases it lost in federal courts, where judges determined that these measures violated the autonomy of local governments.<\/p>\n<p>This time, the government seeks to set a stronger legal precedent that will allow it to force cities to cooperate with ICE.<\/p>\n<h2>Trump vs. Boston Mayor<\/h2>\n<p>Mayor Michelle Wu, the <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MayorWu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">daughter of Taiwanese immigrants and the first woman of color<\/a> to lead Boston, has consistently championed the importance of community trust policies.<\/p>\n<p>According to Wu, when immigrants are not afraid of the police, they are more willing to report crimes and cooperate with investigations, which strengthens security throughout the city.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Boston will not back down from its commitment to protect immigrant families.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our policies are designed to ensure everyone&#8217;s safety, not to divide our communities,&#8221;
