The U.S. military is already preparing plans to attack drug traffickers on Venezuelan territory within weeks, NBC News<\/a> reported Friday, citing two unnamed U.S. officials close to the matter.<\/p>\n

NBC also cites two other unnamed individuals who are familiar with these plans to bomb drug traffickers in Venezuela, an action that would be a tremendous escalation in an already tense situation in the face of Washington’s heavy military deployment in the southern Caribbean since this past summer.<\/p>\n

Although U.S. strikes could happen within weeks, President Donald Trump has not yet approved any decisions, the sources stated.<\/p>\n

They also pointed out that drone offensives against specific individuals and drug labs are being planned.<\/p>\n

The Trump administration has said that the U.S. contingent, consisting of destroyers, amphibious transport ships, a nuclear-powered submarine or fighter jets, has already destroyed four narco-boats in Caribbean waters.<\/p>\n

They allegedly departed Venezuela with drugs on board.<\/p>\n

U.S. accuses Maduro of drug trafficking<\/h2>\n

Washington accuses the government of Nicol\u00e1s Maduro of being part of the leadership of the Cartel of the Suns.<\/p>\n

An organization for which there is little documentation and which, according to the White House, sends drug shipments to the United States.<\/p>\n

For its part, Venezuela considers that the military operation in the Caribbean is only aimed at exerting pressure to remove Chavism from power.<\/p>\n

The sources consulted by NBC assured that the recent U.S. military escalation responds in part to the fact that the government of the New York magnate considers that Maduro is not doing enough to curb drug trafficking from his country.<\/p>\n

Maduro calls for dialogue<\/h2>\n

Maduro recently wrote a letter to Trump asking to resume dialogue with U.S. special envoy Richard Grenell.<\/p>\n

And to remove Secretary of State Marco Rubio from bilateral affairs, whom Caracas considers a toxic element in the exchanges.<\/p>\n

Trump downplayed the missive recently, and when asked about the possibility of attacks on Venezuelan territory, he merely said “well, they’ll figure it out.”<\/p>\n
