The 2026 World Baseball Classic has become a key part of the road to Olympic qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games, representing a historic opportunity for teams from the Americas, including Mexico.
Organized by Major League Baseball(MLB) and the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC), the tournament will be played from March 5-17, 2026 in various venues around the world, with the United States as one of the main hosts, hosting groups and final phases in cities such as Houston and Miami. Olympic qualification for Los Angeles 2028

One of the main novelties of the 2026 World Baseball Classic is that it will serve as a direct qualifier for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.
According to official confirmations, two teams from the American continent (excluding the United States, which has already secured its ticket as host country) will get a direct pass to the Games.
This is based on their performance in this tournament.
This means that teams such as Mexico, Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Colombia, Canada, Brazil, Nicaragua or Panama could secure one of the Olympic spots directly from the World Classic.
That is if they finish as the top two on the continent outside the USA.
In addition to the World Baseball Classic, the qualification to Los Angeles 2028 considers other important tournaments, such as the WBSC Premier12 2027.
It will award tickets to the best teams from other regions of the world.
As well as a final qualifying phase in 2028, where the last place in the Olympic tournament will be decided.
Mexico and its path to the World Classic 2026

The Mexican National Baseball Team has been placed in Group B of the first round.
It will face the United States, Italy, Brazil and Great Britain at Daikin Park in Houston.
Headquarters that also reflects a large Mexican community in the United States.
In addition to fighting to advance in the World Baseball Classic and seeking to surpass the historic performance of past editions, Mexico will also aspire to be one of the two representatives of the Americas (outside the U.S.) to qualify directly to Los Angeles 2028.
