McCaffrey boosts the offense with a touchdown

The San Francisco 49ers overcame an erratic performance by Brock Purdy, who suffered three interceptions, to beat the Carolina Panthers 20-9 on Monday to close out Week 12 of the NFL season.

The 49ers remain in the hunt for the top spot in the National Football Conference (NFC) West division, with a record of 8-4, chasing the Seattle Seahawks, who are 8-3, and the leader Rams, 9-2.

The Panthers remained in second place in the NFC South with six wins and six losses.

Despite the three interceptions, Purdy scored a touchdown and relied on the ground contribution of Christian McCaffrey, who scored a touchdown, to consummate the victory.

The 49ers’ first series pounded the opposing defense for 72 yards in a series that ended with a touchdown toss to Jauan Jennings to take a 7-0 lead.

Carolina’s defense adjusted, Jaycee Horn intercepted Purdy and set the table for his offense to get the equalizer.

But Bryce Young fumbled, was intercepted in the end zone by Ji’Ayir Brown.

The interception fest continued on San Francisco’s next offensive drive with Purdy’s second stolen fumble.

Now by Mike Jackson, inside the diagonals to prevent another home touchdown.

Brock Purdy extended his fateful streak with his third interception of the game, the second to Jaycee Horn.

The visitors’ offense capitalized with a field goal by Ryan Fitzgerald to bring the Panthers within 7-3.

The Gambusinos responded with a 42-yard kickoff return that Matt Gay connected on to pull away 10-3.

In the third quarter Jaycee Horn left the game due to a blow to the head that placed him in concussion protocol.

The 49ers regained offensive efficiency on their second series of the half led by Christian McCaffrey, who caught a touchdown carry to put his team up 17-3.

Carolina answered with a 29-yard scoring strike to Tetairoa McMillan that made the score 17-9.

In the last period, Matt Gay, who covered the loss of Cuban Eddy Piñeiro, kicked his second field goal to seal the 20-9 victory in the closing game of Week 12 of the NFL.
