The NFL announced Monday the one-game suspension of Cincinnati Bengals star wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase after determining that the player spit on Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Jalen Ramsey during their Week 11 matchup in the 2025 season.
The decision was made known through an official league statement, which cited violation of Rule 12, Section 3, Article 1, which prevents any conduct contrary to the principles of sportsmanship. The punishment entails a substantial financial loss for the 25-year-old catcher. Under the terms of his contract, Ja’Marr Chase will forfeit $448,333 in weekly salary, plus an additional $58,823 per-game bonus, an amount paid only for active participation.
An incident reviewed on video

Although the action was not sanctioned during the game – which ended in a 34-12 Pittsburgh victory – the NFL reviewed the footage following Ramsey’s own complaint and confirmed the act.
Ja’Marr Chase denied what happened at the end of the game, but the video was decisive in the suspension.
The league also noted that the punishment was based on recent precedent:
The one-game suspension imposed on Philadelphia Eagles defensive back Jalen Carter, who spit on Dak Prescott in Week 1.
That case set a clear reference to punish similar acts during the season.
“It’s the most disrespectful thing anyone can do.”

Jalen Ramsey was quick to express his annoyance, calling it an act of cowardice.
“It’s one of the most disrespectful things anyone can do,” the Steelers player stated.
Honestly, it's what cowards do

Cincinnati head coach Zac Taylor also reacted, making it clear that the team will not overlook this type of behavior.
Taylor said he supports Ja’Marr Chase as a person and a player, but acknowledged that the action “crossed the line” and does not represent the team’s values.
Chase has the right to appeal

As per NFL disciplinary rules, Ja’Marr Chase can appeal the suspension.
If he does, one of the league’s three independent officials will review the case and issue a final decision.
What does it mean for the Bengals?
The suspension comes at a difficult time for Cincinnati.
The team, which has struggled to stay competitive in the AFC, will lose its top offensive weapon for the Week 12 matchup against the New England Patriots, a key game in the fight to stay in the postseason.
