Former Brazilian footballer Roberto Carlos, one of the most emblematic figures of world soccer and a Real Madrid legend, was discharged from the hospital in Brazil on Friday, where he had been hospitalized since December 29th, after undergoing a scheduled heart surgery.
Through his social networks, the former player shared a message of gratitude addressed to the medical staff that attended him during his hospitalization. “I thank the entire medical team for the attention, care and accompaniment during this period,” wrote Roberto Carlos, accompanying his words with a photograph in which he appears smiling next to the team of specialists who participated in his treatment.

According to confirmed medical information, Roberto Carlos was admitted to the Vila Nova Star Hospital, in São Paulo, after a coronary obstruction was detected during routine examinations.
Given this finding, physicians recommended angioplasty, a common procedure to restore blood flow in the arteries of the heart.
The angioplasty was performed on the same day of his hospitalization and, according to the medical bulletin issued on December 31, the procedure was carried out “with complete success and without complications”.
The statement also detailed that the ex-football player was progressing satisfactorily, remained stable and showed no symptoms following the operation.
What is angioplasty and why is it relevant?
For many Hispanic readers living in the United States, this type of procedure may sound familiar.
Angioplasty is a minimally invasive procedure used to open blocked arteries, usually by means of a small balloon and, in some cases, the placement of a stent.
It is usually recommended when coronary problems are detected early, as happened in the case of Roberto Carlos, thanks to preventive medical controls.
Cardiovascular health specialists agree on the importance of regular check-ups, especially after the age of 40 or 50, even in people who have led a physically active life, such as former professional athletes.
A historic career on and off the field
Roberto Carlos officially retired from professional soccer in 2012, after a career that established him as one of the best left backs in history.
He played for Real Madrid for 11 years, where he won three Champions League titles, four LaLiga titles and two Intercontinental Cups. In Brazil, he also left his mark on clubs such as Palmeiras and Corinthians.
With the Brazilian national team, he was world champion in Korea-Japan 2002 and also won two America Cups and a Confederations Cup.
His powerful shot, speed and attacking style marked an era and made him a global soccer reference.
Roberto Carlos is currently working as an ambassador for Real Madrid, a role he maintains after overcoming this health episode.
His favorable evolution and medical discharge represent encouraging news both for his followers and for those who see in his case a reminder of the importance of prevention and cardiovascular health care.
