If 2025 has already been consolidated as an outstanding year for the video game industry, everything indicates that 2026 will not only maintain the same level, but could even surpass it.
Over the next few months, long-awaited titles, new installments of historical sagas and original proposals that seek to surprise will hit the market. From major productions to indie games, the calendar looks full and diverse for players of PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series and the new Nintendo Switch 2.
One of the most talked about releases at the beginning of the year will be the return of a Japanese role-playing classic that celebrates 25 years since its debut on the first PlayStation.
This updated version, scheduled for February, will feature a revamped visuals that takes advantage of the power of the current hardware, without losing the aesthetic essence or the character design created by Akira Toriyama. The goal is to offer a modern experience that respects the nostalgia of veteran players.
Terror and survival with Resident Evil
Among the most awaited titles for 2026 is the ninth Resident Evil installment. On this occasion, players will assume the role of FBI agent Grace Ashcroft and one of the most emblematic characters of the franchise, Leon S. Kennedy. The game will stand out for its impressive visual finish and for offering a horror experience that can be enjoyed in both first and third person, maintaining the tension and atmosphere characteristic of the saga.
The independent scene will also have its space with striking proposals such as Denshattack! one of the surprise titles presented at Gamescom. Developed by the Catalan studio Undercoders, the game mixes the railway world – “densha” means train in Japanese- with extreme sports. In this proposal, trains perform impossible acrobatics, spin in the air and travel along the tracks at full speed. Its launch will coincide with the twentieth anniversary of the Barcelona studio.
Superhero and science fiction video games
After the success of Marvel’s Spider-Man, Insomniac Games enters the mutant universe with Marvel Wolverine. The game will bet on a more visceral action and a careful narrative.
On the other hand, Pragmata will offer a science fiction adventure set in a space station, starring Hugh and Diana, a soldier and a girl with special abilities who must work together to survive and return to Earth. The combination of shooting and puzzles will be one of its playable pillars.
Driving will also play an important role with the new installment of Forza Horizon. After touring Mexico, the sixth edition of the Horizon festival will move its open-world racing to Japan, promising a detailed and spectacular recreation of the country. However, the big star of the year will be Grand Theft Auto 6.
If it is not delayed, its release in late 2026 will mark a before and after because of its level of realism and ambition. The expectation is such that many studios will adjust their calendars to avoid coinciding with what could become the biggest launch in the history of entertainment.
