Monterrey beats Mazatlan

Martial, Berterame and Corona shined

Spanish coach Sergio Canales’ Monterrey defeated Mazatlán FC 5-1 on Friday in the third day of the Mexican soccer Clausura Tournament.

The winning goals were scored by Jesús Corona, Argentina’s Jorge Rodríguez and Germán Berterame, France’s Anthony Martial, on penalty, and Iker Fimbres. Ecuador’s Jordan Sierra scored for the home side.

Monterrey dominated from the start thanks to Canales’ playmaking.

In the eighth minute, from the left, the Spaniard put in a cross into the box that Corona headed in to make it 0-1.

In the 21st minute, Canales again did some damage on the left with another cross that, after a series of rebounds, Jorge Rodríguez shot from outside the box that deflected off the goalkeeper to make it 0-2.

Two minutes later, the referee awarded Monterrey a penalty for a foul inside the box on Gerardo Arteaga, which Anthony Martial missed, but scored on the counter-attack to make it 0-3 in the 24th minute.

Rayados does not slacken

In the second half, Monterrey’s Rayados came charging back.

Martial broke down the right and inside the box he set up Berterame for a shot that beat Ricardo Rodríguez to make it 0-4 in the 56th minute.

The goal fair continued in the 65th minute.

Once again, Matial attacked down the right side, took out a defender with a bicycle kick and before the end line crossed to Iker Fimbres, who scored with a right-footed shot for the fifth goal in the 65th minute.

Mazatlán scored the equalizer in the 85th minute when Jordan Sierra broke free and shot a left-footed shot past Luis Cárdenas.

The third day will continue this Saturday with five matches.

The visit of champion Toluca, led by Portuguese striker Paulinho, to Tigres UANL, for whom Ángel Correa, world champion with Argentina, plays, is a highlight.

Guadalajara, whose coach is also Argentine Gabriel Milito, will host Querétaro.

Tijuana, coached by Uruguayan Sebastián ‘Loco’ Abreu, will face San Luis.

Cruz Azul will be at home to Puebla and Atlas will be at home to Necaxa.

On Sunday, América, the only team that has not scored so far in the Clausura, will be looking for their first win in their visit to Pachuca.

The main figure is the Venezuelan Salomón Rondón.

The activity will conclude with the game between Pumas UNAM, of Costa Rican goalkeeper Keylor Navas, who will host León, and the clash between Santos Laguna and Juárez FC.
