It hurt the Clásico! U.S. stops Mexico and flies to the quarterfinals

Mexico fought until the end with two home runs by Jarren Durán, but it was not enough to take away the undefeated northern giant's unbeaten record

The Houston diamond vibrated with yet another edition of baseball’s most intense rivalry, but this time luck was not on the Tricolor’s side.

The U.S. team won 5-3 against Mexico, maintaining its perfect pace in the sixth edition of the World Baseball Classic and practically assuring its place in the next round.

World Classic: Mexico vs USA

The game was defined in a fateful third episode.

Mexican reliever Jesús Cruz was harassed by the U.S. heavy artillery: Bryce Harper lit the fuse with a single and captain Aaron Judge did not spare, sending the ball into the street with a home run that made the stands tremble.

As if that wasn’t enough, Roman Anthony also joined the party with another home run, making the score 5-0 in the blink of an eye.

From the mound, the phenom Paul Skenes (current Cy Young) was unbeatable.

In four innings, the U.S. starter allowed only one hit and gave up seven hits, leaving the Mexican batters with no response.

The awakening of Jarren Durán

When Skenes exited the game, Mexico could finally breathe.

In the sixth inning, outfielder Jarren Durán came up big and hit a solo home run to break the scoreless tie.

Not content with that, in the eighth inning Durán repeated the dose with another home run against Matthew Boyd, making the score 5-3.

The Mexican ninth threatened seriously in the ninth inning with a hit by Joey Meneses, but closer Garrett Whitelock kept his cool and put out the fire by striking out Alejandro Osuna and Julian Ornelas to seal the U.S. victory.

What’s next for Mexico?

With this result, the United States leads Group B with a 3-0 record, while Mexico remains at 2-1, still with a good chance of advancing.

This Tuesday will be key: the Americans face undefeated Italy in the tournament.

Mexico, meanwhile, will have to tighten the screws to secure a place in the quarterfinals.
