The world of cult series is in mourning. Nicholas Brendon, the actor who brought the unforgettable Xander Harris to life on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, passed away yesterday at the age of 54 in his sleep. The news has come as a bucket of cold water for fans, especially since it comes after a year of difficult losses for the original cast.

His “sister” in fiction and star of the saga, Sarah Michelle Gellar, was one of the first to pay tribute to him with a message that gave us goosebumps, quoting a dialogue from the seventh season that today takes on a new meaning. This is how the Buffy cast bids farewell to Nicholas Brendon.

“They’ll never know how hard it is not to be the chosen one.”

Sarah Michelle Gellar shared a photo from the golden years of the series with a line Xander said to Dawn Summers (Michelle Trachtenberg’s character, who sadly also passed away in February 2025):

“You’ll never know how hard it is to be the one who doesn’t get elected…. But I do. I see more than anyone realizes, because no one is looking at me.”

The actress closed her post with a tender: “I saw you, Nicky. I know you’re at peace, in that big rocking chair in heaven.”

“It was real, not perfect.”

For his part, the “vampire with a soul,” David Boreanaz (Angel), also joined in the condolences, highlighting Brendon’s authenticity in an industry as superficial as Hollywood.

“He conveyed something real, not perfect or polished, just real…. And in this business, that matters more than almost anything,” the actor wrote, calling him “brother” in his final farewell.

The end of an era

Nicholas Brendon’s death comes at a bitter time for the franchise.

Just a few weeks ago, Hulu confirmed that the long-awaited reboot of the series, Buffy: New Sunnydale (which was to be directed by Oscar winner Chloé Zhao), has been cancelled for good.

Brendon was an essential part of the seven seasons (1997-2003) of this series that redefined television in the late 1990s.

Although Xander had no powers, he was the glue that held the group together, and today his absence leaves a void impossible to fill.

The interpreter died in his sleep, according to a statement from his family reported by Variety.

‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ (‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’) originated as a movie in 1992, directed by Fran Kuzui and written by Josh Whedon.

Five years later came its television adaptation, starring Gellar, which ran for seven seasons (1997-2003) and remains one of the cult series of the late 1990s.
