Mexico City’s Attorney General’s Office confirmed that it is investigating the death of Carolina Flores, a 27-year-old former Baja California beauty queen who was found dead a week ago, as a femicide, in a crime in which authorities have the victim’s mother-in-law as a suspect.

According to initial reports, the young woman, originally from the state of Baja California (northwest), was found dead on April 15 at a home in the wealthy neighborhood of Polanco, in the Mexican capital, while a day later her husband filed a complaint with the authorities.

“Since that moment, ministerial, expert and field investigation procedures have been carried out continuously, including the intervention of specialized personnel at the site, the processing of evidence and actions for the identification of the person identified as the probable perpetrator,” explained the Public Prosecutor’s Office.

Although the investigation is in a preliminary stage, the victim’s husband pointed to his own mother as the perpetrator of the murder, identified as Erika María ‘N’, after which the authorities issued an arrest warrant for her.

The hypothesis is that the victim’s mother-in-law may have used a nine millimeter caliber weapon in the crime, whose motives have not been revealed at this time.

There is also no official confirmation of the suspect’s whereabouts.

At the home in question, paramedics found the body of Carolina Flores with a gunshot wound to her head, according to local media Telediario.

The mother of the victim, crowned as ‘Miss Teen Universe’ of Baja California in 2017, spread through her social networks a call for a peaceful march for this Saturday in the city of Ensenada, with the aim that “our voice reaches the center of the country”, to demand justice and that “her name is not another victim”.

For their part, the authorities of Baja California, where the young woman was from, condemned the murder and pledged to accompany the family throughout the process, which will take place in Mexico City.

Feminicidal violence is one of the main problems facing Mexico, reported Agencia EFE, with an average of ten women murdered daily in the country.
