A few months before his expected fight against Mario Barrios, boxing legend Manny Pacquiao spoke publicly about the role of Mexican Saul Canelo Alvarez in the current world boxing world. During an interview granted to ESNEWS, the Filipino was clear: “Yes, he is a role model. He is one of the role models in boxing”.

These words come at an important time for both fighters. On the one hand, Pacquiao will return from retirement to face Barrios for the World Boxing Council (WBC) Welterweight title on July 19 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. At 46, Pacquiao has a record of 62 wins (39 by KO), 8 losses and 2 draws, and was recently inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame this 2025.

Meanwhile, Canelo Alvarez, a native of Guadalajara, Jalisco, continues to make history in the 168-pound class.

In April, he managed to unify for the second time all four world belts after defeating William Scull by unanimous decision in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

This victory consolidates his dominance at super middleweight.

Now, the tapatío is preparing for his next challenge:

A fight against Terence Crawford, scheduled for Saturday, September 13, 2025 on U.S. soil.

Although the exact venue has not yet been revealed, a high-impact bout is expected.

Crawford, the undisputed welterweight champion, will have to move up two divisions to face Canelo, making this one of the most anticipated bouts of the year.

The fight is part of a four-fight contract Alvarez signed with Turki Al-Sheikh, a key figure in professional boxing in the Middle East.
