ICE arrests Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. for alleged ties to Sinaloa Cartel

He faces immediate deportation to Mexico

Mexican boxer Julio César Chávez Jr. was arrested this Tuesday, July 2, 2025 by ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) agents in Studio City, California, for his alleged involvement in criminal activities linked to the Sinaloa Cartel, an organization considered a terrorist organization by the U.S. government.

According to the Department of HomelandSecurity (DHS), Chávez Jr. has an active warrant for his arrest in Mexico for crimes related to trafficking in arms, ammunition and explosives, and for his involvement with organized crime.

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. legally entered the United States in August 2023 on a B2 tourist visa, valid until February 2024.

Subsequently, he applied for permanent residency in April 2024, claiming to be married to a U.S. citizen.

However, the investigation revealed that his wife had ties to the Sinaloa Cartel through a previous relationship with a deceased son of Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman.

In addition, the former boxer filed fraudulent statements on his immigration application.

It was not until June 27, 2025 when it was determined that Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. was in the country illegally and was removable, thus initiating his deportation process.

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. is no stranger to legal problems in the United States.

His background includes:

2012: Convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol in California.

2024: Convicted of illegal possession of assault weapons and manufacturing modified rifles.

2023: Arrest warrant issued in Mexico for organized crime and trafficking in weapons for military use.

The DHS has labeled Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. as a “serious threat to public safety” and confirmed that his removal from the country is a priority.

Currently, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. remains in ICE custody and his deportation to Mexico is imminent, where he will face criminal charges before the Mexican justice system.
