A shooting at an office building in Midtown Manhattan on Monday afternoon, July 28, killed four people, including a New York Police Department (NYPD) officer, and left another person seriously injured, Mayor Eric Adams confirmed during a press conference.
The attacker also died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to local authorities who confirmed his identity: Shane Devone Tamura, a 27-year-old man from Las Vegas.
Chronology of the attack
The shooting began around 6:30 p.m., when Shane Devone Tamura entered the building located at 345 Park Avenue, armed with an M4 rifle, and began shooting in the lobby.
There he first killed 36-year-old officer Didarul Islam, who was off-duty and assigned as part of a private security company.
Tamura, previously double parked outside in a BMW, also killed three civilians, including a Blackstone executive, and then rode an elevator up to the 33rd floor to continue shooting until he took his own life.
Officer Didarul Islam dies at the scene
Among the victims was Officer Didarul Islam, who left behind an eight-month pregnant wife and two young children.
The mayor of New York, Eric Adams, lamented the shooting and the death of the officer, through his official X account.
“He represented the best of New York City, an immigrant from Bangladesh who put on a uniform to protect and serve us all.
“I am praying for his wife, children, parents, and loved ones.
“I cannot imagine the pain they’re going through.
“When NYPD members go to work every day, their families pray a day like this never happens.
“We will be with them every step of the way”, Adams added in his message.
3 more dead and one seriously injured
The injured person – an NFL employee – is in critical condition after receiving immediate medical attention.
“Our city also mourns the three other innocent lives lost this evening and is praying for another innocent victim fighting for his life in critical condition,” Adams said in another X post.
“It’s unthinkable these people were taken from us so randomly and senselessly.
“They and their loved ones are in our hearts”, Adams said in his message.
The shooting occurred in a 35-story skyscraper that houses companies such as Blackstone, the NFL and auditing firm KPMG.
The attack caused scenes of panic in the middle of rush hour: employees shared internal alert messages and some barricaded themselves in offices and bathrooms adjacent to the lobby.

Mayor Eric Adams called the incident “another senseless act of gun violence” and urged the public to avoid the area between Park Avenue and East 51st Street.
The FBI joined the investigation, describing the space as an “active crime scene.”
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed that Tamura acted alone and stressed that ammunition, a rifle case, magazines and prescription medication were found in his vehicle.
According to the Gun Violence Archive, this is already the 254th mass shooting in 2025 in the U.S., considering those involving four or more people between dead and wounded, not counting the attacker.
Who is Shane Devon Tamura?
The assailant, Shane Devone Tamura, had traveled from Las Vegas to New York days before the attack.
According to Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, he had a documented history of mental health issues and carried prescription medication in his name in the backpack found in his car.
Additional ammunition, magazines and a rifle case were also found in the vehicle.
Authorities are still investigating the motive for the attack and have found no evidence of accomplices or links to extremist groups, according to media outlets such as the Wall Street Journal.
