Kroger, one of the largest supermarket chains in the United States, confirmed that it will close around 60 stores over the next 18 months as part of its optimization strategy. The announcement was made in June 2025 during the presentation of its first quarter financial report, where it was explained that underperforming stores would be gradually closed.

Although Kroger began the fiscal year with more than 2,700 active supermarkets, the closure represents only 2-5% of its total network, meaning that most customers will continue to have branches open in their communities.

In addition to these five stores, Kroger has already confirmed further closures for the coming months:

Decatur, Georgia – 3479 Memorial Drive (Sept. 13)
Kingsport, Tennessee – 1664 East Done Drive (Sept. 19)
Abingdon, Virginia – 466 South Cummings Street (Sept. 19)
Brookhaven, Georgia – 3855 Buford Highway (Oct. 18)

These closures are part of the national strategic plan to reduce operations in less profitable markets.

Kroger assured that all affected employees will have the option to be relocated to other nearby branches.

The company works hand in hand with the UFCW union to ensure that job transitions are supportive and real alternatives for working families.

Despite the closures, Kroger maintains a positive financial outlook.

In its latest quarterly report, identical sales (excluding fuel) grew by up to 3.7%, with particular momentum in online and pharmacy sales.

The company plans to invest $3.6 billion to $3.8 billion by 2025 to modernize its supermarkets, open new stores and improve the digital customer experience.

This year alone, more than 30 major remodeling projects are expected in different cities throughout the country.
