The Los Angeles Dodgers were crowned Major League Baseball champions for the second consecutive year on Saturday in a 4-5 outcome that mixed pyrotechnics and epics.

Everything became clear in the second extra inning of the seventh game against the Toronto Blue Jays when Venezuelan Miguel Rojas hit the tying home run and Will Smith the title run.

The Blue Jays had it won going into the eighth inning up 4-2, but homers by Max Muncy and Miguel Rojas changed the story of the game at Toronto’s Rogers Centre.

In the second extra inning, Will Smith delivered the first double in a World Series for the Los Angeles franchise since the New York Yankees between 1998 and 2000.

Smith hit a tie-breaking home run in the eleventh inning and Japan’s Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who was ultimately named the Series MVP, dominated as a relief pitcher.

With the win, the Dodgers (4-3) added their ninth major league championship (1955, 1959, 1963, 1965, 1981, 1981, 1988, 2020, 2024 and 2025) and become the first team to repeat as World Series champions since the New York Yankees from 1998 to 2000.

Smith became the Dodgers’ hero after Venezuelan Miguel Rojas’ home run, which tied the game in the ninth inning and prevented the defeat of the reigning MLB champions.

Yamamoto (3-0) pitched 2.2 blank episodes and won his third game of this Fall Classic.

In the game, Bo Bichette broke the ice in the third inning, when with Dominican Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and George Springer running the bases, he detonated his bat against a Shohei Ohtani pitch, which carried the ball over the wall, to put three runs on the scoreboard for the Blue Jays (3-0).

The Dodgers responded with a run (3-1) in the top of the fourth inning when they loaded the bases against veteran right-hander Max Scherzer, and Dominican Teoscar Hernandez hit a line drive that center fielder Daulton Varsho caught diving headfirst, allowing Smith to advance to the register.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, reliever Justin Wrobleski hit Giménez with a ball, which triggered an argument that caused the dugouts of both teams to jump on the field, which stopped the game for 10 minutes.

The Dodgers got closer (3-2) in the sixth inning when Edman hit a sacrifice fly to center field off right-hander Chris Bassitt, driving in Mookie Betts.

The Blue Jays struck back in the bottom of the sixth inning when Gimenez hit a two-base shot off Tyler Glasnow to drive in Ernie Clement and give Toronto a two-run lead (4-2).

Venezuela’s Rojas changes the landscape

The MLB champions did not let their guard down and came back in the eighth inning, putting their deficit at one run (4-3) on Max Muncy’s homer to right field off the pitching of rookie Trey Yesavage.

Venezuela’s Miguel Rojas completely silenced the Roger Centre in the ninth inning when, with one out, he homered off Jeff Hoffman to even the score (4-4).

In the bottom of the ninth, the Blue Jays loaded the bases with one out, but Yamamoto forced Varsho to ground out to second baseman Rojas, who retired the runner at the plate, and then Clement was the victim of a great catch by Cuban Andy Pagés, who managed to keep the ball, even though he collided with Puerto Rican Kiké Hernández at the left field fence.

The Dodgers also filled the pads with one out in the tenth, but Dominican Seranthony Dominguez retired Pagés and Hernandez to leave the game even.

The reigning champions broke the tie in the eleventh inning on Smith’s home run with two outs against Shane Bieber.

In the bottom of the eleventh inning, the Blue Jays put the tying run in the anteroom with one out, but Yamamoto overpowered Mexico’s Alejandro Kirk with a ground ball for a double to end the game and seal the Dodgers’ victory.

Ohtani, who took the ball to open the game, was hit with five hits and three runs in just 2.1 episodes on the mound, in which he struck out three batters.

Bieber (1-1) took the loss, allowing Smith’s home run.
