Hundreds of Mexicans took to the streets of Morelia (west) on Sunday to demand justice for the murder of the mayor of Uruapan, Carlos Manzo Rodríguez, which occurred on Saturday night after a public event.

The demonstration, which began peacefully, turned into a riot when a group of protesters broke into the State Government Palace and caused damage inside the building with the intention of demanding the resignation of the governor of Michoacan, Alfredo Ramirez Bedolla.

The demonstrators marched from the Aqueduct to the Historic Center of Morelia shouting “The government killed him!”, “Out with Bedolla!” and “Out with Morena!”, alluding to the governor and the ruling National Regeneration Movement (Morena).

During the mobilization, called on social networks under the slogan “Enough abuses and omissions,” attendees demanded a halt to violence and impunity in the state, one of the hardest hit by organized crime.

Videos posted on social networks show the moment when several demonstrators forced open the doors of the Government Palace and entered the building, where they threw objects, broke furniture and set fire to part of the interior.

Local media confirmed that the seat of the state executive was recovered shortly after 18.00 local time (00.00 GMT Monday) and that no injuries were reported.

While protests were taking place in Morelia, a mass was being held in Uruapan for the murdered mayor. According to authorities, one of the alleged assailants was killed after the attack and two people were arrested for their alleged participation in the crime.

On Sunday morning, Omar García Harfuch, Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, assured that Manzo had had federal and municipal protection since 2024, which was reinforced at the beginning of 2025, however, relatives of the mayor claim that the authorities had not provided him with protection despite the mayor’s claims.

For her part, Sheinbaum condemned “with absolute firmness” the crime and assured that there will be no impunity.

Authorities have identified the Jalisco Cartel – New Generation (CJNG), Los Caballeros Templarios, Los Viagras, Pueblos Unidos and Los Blancos de Troya as operating in Uruapan.

On October 8, Manzo asked Garcia Harfuch and Sheinbaum not to withdraw the National Guard from the municipality, as the agents had only been in the area for a few days.
