Academy announces 317 films to compete for Oscar nominations

The Academy announced that 317 films will compete for nominations at this year's Oscar Awards.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced Thursday that 317 films are eligible for the 98th Academy Awards, including 201 for the Best Picture category.

The list of the 317 films has not been disclosed by the Academy.

Feature films encompassed in what is considered the magna category of film’s most prestigious awards “met additional requirements beyond those of the general entry, including increased theatrical exhibition and submission of a confidential Representation and Academy Inclusion Standards Entry (RAISE) form,” the Academy said in a statement.

On December 16, the Academy announced the shortlists for 12 of the 24 categories for this year’s Oscars, in which the Spanish representative, Oliver Laxe’s ‘Sirat’, made history in five categories.

The horror/vampire thriller ‘Sinners’ and the second part of the musical ‘Wicked’ lead the shortlist, which also includes Brazil’s ‘The Secret Agent’, Argentina’s ‘Belen’ and Mexican director Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Frankenstein’.

The deadline for the more than 7,000 members that make up the Academy to vote on which films will be nominated in this edition opens next Monday, January 12, 2026 and will end on Friday, January 16.

Nominations for the 98th Oscars, the most prestigious international film awards, will be announced on Thursday, January 22, 2026 and the winners will be announced on March 15 at the emblematic Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, reported Agencia EFE.
