An artificial intelligence (AI) technology company has resurrected US actor Val Kilmer for inclusion in ‘As Deep As The Grave’, the film he was to star in before his death in April last year.

Kilmer was cast to play Father Fintan, a Catholic priest and Native American spiritualist, and although he didn’t get to shoot a single scene due to his health, the film’s director, Coerte Voorhees, refused to replace him, Variety reported Wednesday.

“He was the actor I wanted for this role,” Voorhees said, in statements picked up by the specialized media.

This digital recreation, which marks his first posthumous role, came to life thanks to the support of his family, who embraced the project as a tribute to the actor’s legacy.

‘As Deep As The Grave’, based on a true story, tells the story of the excavations of archaeologists Ann and Earl Morris in Canyon de Chelly, in the state of Arizona (USA), in their effort to trace the history of the Navajo people.

In addition to Kilmer, who will play a significant role, the film stars Abigial Lawrie (‘Tin Star’) and Tom Felton (‘Harry Potter’).

The American actor, who rose to popularity after playing singer Jim Morrison or the superhero Batman, and acted in blockbuster films such as ‘Top Gun’ (1986) and ‘Tombstone’ (1993), died in Los Angeles at the age of 65 on April 1.

Kilmer, diagnosed with throat cancer in 2014, was able to recover but passed away as a result of pneumonia, the actor’s daughter Mercedes Kilmer shared, Agencia EFE reported.
