Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum insisted this Friday that, in cooperation with the United States on security matters, national sovereignty is not up for negotiation.

At a ceremony to deliver the Pensión Mujeres Bienestar in the city of Tecomán, Colima state (west), Sheinbaum responded to a message posted by U.S. President Donald Trump on his Truth Social platform.

Trump shared a message from a user who pointed out that Sheinbaum has repeatedly rejected the proposal that the United States intervene in Mexico to fight drug cartels.

The president accompanied the message with a video of a part of the usual morning press conference on March 9 in which Sheinbaum answers Trump that “no” when Trump has proposed that the army of his country enters Mexican territory.

Collaboration yes, intervention no: Mexico’s position

“A few minutes ago President Trump made a publication on his social networks related to Mexico,” the Mexican president told the audience.

“But maybe it is not very well informed because we are working with the United States on the security issue, but there is a condition that we have always set, because we can collaborate, work together, but there is something that we have fought for all our lives the people of Mexico, sovereignty, and that is not up for negotiation. Long live Mexico’s sovereignty and independence,” added Sheinbaum.

Last Monday, Sheinbaum explained that her government has rejected Trump’s proposals for U.S. troops to enter Mexican territory to fight drug cartels, while defending bilateral security cooperation.

“How good that President Trump is saying publicly that when he has proposed to us that the U.S . Army enter Mexico, we have said no. Because it’s the truth, we have said no. And we proudly continue to say no,” the president stated during her morning press conference.

Sheinbaum maintained that Mexico maintains coordination with Washington in areas such as intelligence and security, but insisted that operations against organized crime on national territory correspond exclusively to Mexican authorities.

The debate over security cooperation between the two countries intensified following the capture and death in February of Jalisco Cartel – New Generation leader Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, alias El Mencho, considered one of the most wanted drug traffickers in Mexico and the United States.
