After months of speculation about a possible collaboration between Anne Hathaway and director David Lowery, production company A24 finally unveiled the first trailer for Mother Mary, one of its most talked-about projects heading into 2026.

The release of the trailer, which for now does not show too many narrative details, served to confirm the tone and ambition of the film: a proposal marked by aesthetics, emotional tension and a strong musical base.

Lowery, known for works such as A Ghost Story and The Green Knight, heads this project as writer and director, and the trailer reveals that this is a piece with an intense and unconventional atmosphere.

Anne Hathaway leads the cast and a story with a musical focus

So far Mother Mary has been confirmed to feature a large cast that includes, in addition to Hathaway, Michaela Coel, Hunter Schafer, Atheena Frizzell, Kaia Gerber, Jessica Brown Findlay, Isaura Barbé-Brown, Alba Baptista, Sian Clifford and FKA twigs, among other names mentioned in various reports around the trailer.

About the plot, the advance is deliberately reserved, but a report quoted in specialized media indicates that it is a story centered on a pop star (played by Hathaway) who goes through an emotional crisis in the middle of her career and ends up reuniting with a key figure from her creative past. In the published notes, Coel is mentioned as a designer/collaborator linked to the protagonist, which points to a story about personal tensions and artistic processes.

One of the most relevant elements of the project is its musical component. It has been reported that the film includes original music written and produced by Jack Antonoff, Charli XCX and FKA twigs, and that Anne Hathaway performs the songs within the film. In addition, FKA twigs is part of the cast and also participates in the musical creation linked to the project, which reinforces the hybrid approach between film and pop.

Following the trailer’s release, Hathaway shared a reflection on the acting challenge Mother Mary entailed. In statements recovered by the press, she expressed that the script made it clear to her that she could not “play” the character in a conventional way, but that she had to transform herself to allow Lowery to build the work from his creative point of view: she spoke of “becoming material” so that the director could create.

The film is scheduled for release in April 2026, which is shortly before another major release tied to Hathaway: The Devil Wears Prada 2, which is slated for a May 1, 2026 U.S. release.
