Minnesota Timberwolves rising star Anthony Edwards was fined $50,000 by the NBA after making an obscene gesture and uttering inappropriate language during Game 1 of the Western Conference playoffs against the Los Angeles Lakers on Saturday, April 19, 2025.
The incident occurred as Edwards, 23, prepared to enter the third quarter. Upon hearing boos directed at teammate Rudy Gobert from the stands of Crypto.com Arena, the shooting guard reacted by putting his hand to his crotch and uttering a vulgar comment to a fan, which was captured by the broadcast cameras and quickly went viral on social networks. The league, through an official statement, qualified the behavior as “inappropriate conduct incompatible with NBAstandards” and applied the corresponding economic sanction.
Disciplinary history

The most recent sanction brings the total amount of fines imposed on Anthony Edwards for the 2024-2025 season to $380,000.
The player had previously been fined for cursing in post-game interviews, openly criticizing referees and accumulating technical fouls.
In February, Anthony Edwards was suspended one game after reaching his 16th technical foul, in accordance with current regulations.
At the end of the regular season, the league overturned an additional technical to avoid a second automatic suspension, in a decision that generated media controversy.
Despite the controversy, the shooting guard maintained his performance on the court:
22 points, 9 assists and 8 rebounds in the opening win against the Lakers.
Legal dispute over paternity

While he shines in the playoffs, Anthony Edwards faces a tricky legal situation off the court.
In October 2024, his daughter Aubri Summers was born, the fruit of a previous relationship with Ayesha Howard, who is also the mother of rapper Lil Baby’s son.
That same month, Anthony Edwards filed a lawsuit requesting a DNA test.
This through a neutral laboratory, which confirmed his paternity in March 2025.

Howard received temporary full legal and physical custody of the child pending the resolution of child support.
Court documents state that Anthony Edwards “is not seeking custody or visitation at this time,” and that the only issue to be resolved is financial.
The player has requested a hearing in Georgia to formally establish his financial responsibility.
Mother’s claims

Ayesha Howard, who is currently unemployed, has applied for child support, childbirth-related expenses and reimbursement of legal fees.
Her attorney explained that Howard is currently relying on “personal savings, family support and any help Anthony Edwards offers for her daughter’s welfare.”
The Lakers tied the series 1-1 on Tuesday, April 22, and Game 3 is scheduled for Friday, April 25 in Minnesota, where a tense sports and media atmosphere is expected.
The focus is not only on Edwards’ performance, but also on how he will handle off-field pressure.
