The NFL’ s Buffalo Bills announced Monday the firing of head coach Sean McDermott following their American Football Conference (AFC) divisional round loss to the Denver Broncos.
“Sean has done an outstanding job leading our team for the past nine seasons, but now we need a new leadership structure to give this organization the best opportunity to take our team to the next level. We owe it to our players and the ‘Bills Mafia,'” said Terry Pegula, team owner.
Elimination against Broncos accelerated the change

The decision came after the Buffalo Bills were eliminated in overtime 33-30 by the Denver Broncos the previous Saturday.
This prevented the team from reaching the American Conference Final, the prelude to the Super Bowl.
“Sean helped change the mindset of this organization and was instrumental in turning the Bills into a team that was consistently in the playoffs.”
“I respect all the hard work, loyalty and attention to detail he showed for this team and the community. I wish Sean and his family the very best,” Pegula added.
McDermott arrived at the Bills in the 2017 season with the mission of making him a frequent playoff participant, something he matched.

Prior to that year, Buffalo had its most recent postseason appearance in the 1999 campaign and since McDermott’s first season the Bills qualified.
In nine seasons, the coach led the team to eight playoff appearances.
He was eliminated twice in the wild card round and four times in the divisional round.
He reached two AFC title games, losing to the Kansas City Chiefs in 2020 and 2024.

McDermott leaves with a regular season record of 98 wins and 50 losses, and a playoff record of eight wins and eight losses.
“Effective immediately, Brandon Beane will serve as president of operations and general manager of the Buffalo Bills and will oversee the search for our new coaching staff,” the owner concluded.
