Mexico’s Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, one of the most recognized fighters of the 20th century, will return to the ring on September 12 in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, against an opponent yet to be determined.

Turki Alalshikh, owner of Ring Magazine, announced Thursday on social networks the return of the fighter in a function to be called “Mexico against the world”, which will be held hours before the anniversary of the Independence of Mexico.

Canelo Alvarez lost his super middleweight division titles on September 25 when he was defeated by American Terrence Crawford.

After which the fighter underwent elbow surgery.

Against Crawford, the Mexican showed little speed and was outclassed, which, in addition to costing him the world belts, raised the question of how much time he has left in boxing.

With 63 wins, 39 by knockout; 3 draws and 2 losses, Canelo Alvarez is the best Mexican boxer in the last 25 years.

The opponent has not yet been determined

However, he has been questioned for evading rivals, such as American David Benavidez, who has challenged him time and again.

Benavidez holds the World Boxing Council light heavyweight belt and does not seem likely to be the opponent of ‘Canelo’, who will try to regain the belts lost to Crawford, who retired after defeating the Mexican.

After losing on May 7, 2022 to Russian Dmitry Bivol, the Mexican won six consecutive fights.

But in none of them was he able to win before the limit, which he did for the last time in 2021 against American Caleb Plant.

Why do they call Saúl Álvarez “Canelo”?

Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s nickname was born at a very young age, when he began to stand out in amateur boxing in Guadalajara.

His coaches and teammates gave him that nickname because of the reddish color of his hair, an uncommon shade among Mexicans.

This is reminiscent of “canelo”, a word used in Mexico to describe redheads or light-skinned people with freckles.

Over time, the name became part of its sports and media identity, until it became a globally recognized brand in professional boxing.
