Captive Vancouver: Müller travels to Canada with excitement and nerves

Bayern Munich legend Thomas Müller is making history by joining MLS side Vancouver Whitecaps. After 16 years with the German club, the 35-year-old midfielder embarked on his first flight without his inseparable teammate Manuel Neuer on Friday in a move that marks a major professional change.

“It’s my first flight without Manuel Neuer in maybe 15 years… ‘Manuele’, where are you?” joked Thomas Müller from the plane, mixing nostalgia and enthusiasm for his new adventure.

Upon his arrival in Vancouver, Thomas Müller was warmly welcomed by nearly 800 fans and a delegation from the Musqueam Nation, the local native community.

With drums, traditional songs and a cultural symbol, the hosts expressed their respect:

“This is your new home, and you can stay with us,” was heard at the welcoming ceremony.

Vancouver Whitecaps confirmed the signing of the iconic German player as a free agent.

Under contract for the remainder of the 2025 season with an option to continue as a Designated Player in 2026.

According to sources, Thomas Müller could make his debut this Sunday, August 17 at BC Place, facing the Houston Dynamo.

The date will depend on the arrival of your International Transfer Certificate, visa and work permit.

Before the trip, Thomas Müller confessed to feeling excited and nervous about the change.

“I’m going with the desire to play and contribute. I hope to adapt soon,” he expressed with his characteristic humor.

Officially introduced at a press conference, the German said:

“I used to play soccer; now I’ll play soccer.”

He also highlighted having spoken to the likes of Alphonso Davies, Marco Reus and Bastian Schweinsteiger before making the big decision.

Thomas Müller’s arrival represents an injection of quality, leadership and visibility for the Whitecaps.

Currently second in the Western Conference, the team is looking for a historic championship and sees in his incorporation a key piece to achieve it.
