Sanctuary Cities No Longer Safe? CBP Ramps Up Immigration Raids

Arrests even in protected areas

CBP (Customs and Border Protection) recently used its official X (formerly Twitter) account to reiterate its support for local law enforcement working with ICE and the federal government on immigration enforcement, including in U.S. sanctuary cities.

This message seeks to emphasize that local policies do not override federal detention and deportation authority. It was accompanied by a Fox News video in which a reporter asks Ron Vitiello, a senior advisor to the agency, about what happened in Colorado, where three police officers were disciplined after participating with ICE in the detention of Utah college student Caroline Dias Goncalves.

Following the shooting of a CBP agent in New York, “border czar” Tom Homan publicly announced that the government will “flood the area” with more federal agents in U.S. cities with sanctuary policies.

The Department of Homeland Security also stated that ICE continues to detain “criminal aliens” in these jurisdictions.

In Chicago, top government officials attended to launch enhanced immigration operations involving multiple federal agencies.

The local immigrant community has expressed great concern and is already preparing legal action.

In Los Angeles in June 2025, immigration raids in downtown Los Angeles triggered massive protests.

Authorities mobilized the National Guard, and clashes, arrests and injuries were reported.

What it means for immigrants in the U.S.

Although U.S. sanctuary cities limit local police collaboration with ICE, they do not stop federal operations within their territory.

Both CBP and ICE continue to exercise jurisdiction in these areas.

This implies greater caution for immigrants, even in spaces considered safe. It is crucial:

Know your rights (such as the right to remain silent and not to allow warrantless entry).
