The NFL has had Christmas games on and off since 1920.

Although due to the number of teams and calendar design it was not common for games to be scheduled on December 25.

Not even with the birth of the playoffs in 1932, when the calendar was extended to the second week of December if it coincided with Christmas.

It was not until 1971, with 26 teams, that the league had a pair of playoff games on December 25:

Dallas Cowboys vs. Minnesota Vikings and Miami Dolphins vs. Kansas City Chiefs, the latter lasting nearly four hours because it took two overtimes for the Dolphins to win 27-24.
